The year was 2017. I was hosting a mastermind with a small group of entrepreneurs. In the corner, on a folding chair, sat Deborah—hands clenched, nervous energy you could actually “see” from across the room.
Why?
Because we were about to talk to God and (get this) Deborah used to be a Catholic nun.
For nearly 30 years.
Poverty. Chastity. Obedience. And a few Hail Marys mixed in for good measure.
You have to hand it to Sister Deborah. She really gave it her all. I mean, she was ALL IN…well, at least until…
Deborah fell in love.
It wasn’t intentional. (Is it ever?) It just…happened. One day, she’s in the abbey quietly singing, “How do you solve a problem like Maria?” and the next she’s swept off her feet.
So anyway, Deborah did the same thing billions of people do when they fall in love—she got married. But, for her, that required an additional step. She had to leave the church.
After leaving professional religion, Deborah started to believe (the lie) that she had also left God. Or maybe it was the other way around — maybe God had left her? At least, that’s what it felt like late at night in the darkness when Deborah whispered into the silence, “Where did You go?” and heard the most terrifying sound anyone could hear — which is nothing.
She asked it so many times, and in so many different variations, that the opposite question started to rear its tail in her mind... A question I can guarantee YOU have asked yourself too…
Has God Left ME?
Around that time, a friend recommended she attend a God Talks event. At first, Deborah didn't know what to expect. She had devoted most of her life to God. What could she learn at an event that wasn’t even hosted by the Church? Didn’t she need a priest or something to stand in between? But since she wasn't getting any answers on her own, she gave it a shot. And to her credit, she asked God the questions.
Not because she expected anything to happen (she didn’t).
Not because she thought it would help.
She asked because—”why not? I have nothing to lose anyway.”
And then she heard HIS VOICE.
She asked: “What lies do I believe about you, God?”
And He said, “That I am done with you.”
She asked: “What’s true about you, God?”
And He said, “I love you, and I haven’t forgotten the work you’ve done for Me… and still do.”
Now, I have to admit that the last part left me speechless. I get goosebumps around the part about “... and still do.” You know, God could have just told her that He appreciated the work she did back in the day when she donned a habit, prayed the rosary, and wore a sour face at Maria (who kept singing in the Abbey). But when God added that last part, “and still do,” it was like a beautiful lance that worked its way into her heart so it could heal.
Can you imagine what this did for Deborah, who was ducking and running for ten years from a God who was supposed to be angry but wasn’t? Ten years putting her fingers in her ears and screaming, “Nah, nah, nah” at a God who sounded so much like silence it was deafening.
How epic is it that He showed up at the right time to tell her how much He appreciates her service — even now? All those post-religion moments when she was helping other people just because she was being herself, God counted as “work” for Him… even a decade after her official “service” had ended.
So that got me thinking about you…in a lot of ways, I imagine you’re probably a lot like Deborah. You’ve put in “your time.” You’ve tried to please God. You’ve given money, effort, and energy only to find His voice distant or even disappointingly silent.
But what if there were a different way?

Talking to God can become the most natural, impactful thing you ever do. And it’s not “extra credit Christianity.” It’s essential—because God created you for something extraordinary. A mission. A calling. A next assignment.
